Sports Medicine isn't just for Athletes!
working in the realm of Sports Medicine is dear to Caryn's heart. She grew up as a gymnast and has a list of injuries to show for it! From excessive over-training to multiple falls off the balance beam, Caryn has personal experience with physical pain and the road to recovery.
While a student at UC Santa Barbara in the 1980's, Caryn directed the Peer Sports Medicine Clinic sponsored by the Health Services and Wellness Center. The goal of the clinic was to help the large population of student athletes heal from various injuries and continue their athletic endeavors. Working there over three years, she also taught a host of students (usually pre-med majors) how to work in the clinic-or on the athletic field. For one unit in Physical Education, these students learned to:
After graduating from UCSB in 1988, Caryn worked for five years with several sports savvy chiropractic doctors, furthering her knowledge of orthopedic care. At that time she also became an x-ray technician and spent many hours "in gym" counseling members at 24 Hour Fitness.
From 2006 to 2010, caryn taught Sports medicine massage to massage therapists.
Weekend Warriors Wanted
Fitness should be fun and is best on a regular schedule. Most people find themselves getting all the weeks worth of exercise on the weekend. Which means. -- ouch! - assess injuries for severity of tissues torn, bruised, or broken and refer out as needed.
- apply topical treatments, taping and/or splints
- advise on stretching, strengthening and home care
